2017 Spring Meeting


      



Join the Faculty of Pain Medicine in Australia’s surfing capital, Torquay, for our 2017 spring meeting “Transcending pain: Ride the next wave”. This dynamic three-day event will bring together delegates from a range of specialities including pain medicine, anaesthesia, rehabilitation, palliative care, surgery, psychiatry, and allied health, with a strong focus on attracting trainees.

Participate in cutting--edge sessions on consciousness and pain, psychology, neuropathic pain, cancer pain, acute pain and physician-assisted dying as well as workshops, emergency response activities, masterclass sessions and enhanced audience participation.

The meeting will be held at the RACV Torquay Resort in Victoria from September 22-24, 2017. The healthcare industry exhibition will provide companies with an opportunity to showcase the latest equipment in pain management technology in both the acute and chronic setting, and will be available throughout the meeting.

Workshops

All workshops will be held off-site at the University Hospital, Geelong on Friday 22 September. Transportation will be arranged from RACV Resort, Torquay return.


W01A: Cardiac arrest CPD emergency response activity
Facilitator: Dr Amutha Samuel
This workshop meets the criteria for the FPM/ANZCA emergency response cardiac arrest activity. Participants are supported through developing skills to enable recognition and treatment of a cardiac arrest in an adult patient. This workshop will underscore the importance of crisis resource management principles, advanced life support (ALS) guidelines, and effective communication and teamwork.

W02A: Acute severe behavioural disturbance
Facilitator: Dr Stephanie Oak
Be involved in this one time workshop designed to road-test and collaborate on the first FPM emergency response activity on acute severe behavioural disturbance. Contribute to the design of this planned emergency response activity before it is rolled out online to Fellows of the Faculty, and score CPD points for your input.

W03A: CICO CPD emergency response activity 
Facilitator: Dr Amutha Samuel
This hands-on workshop will cover algorithms, equipment and human factors as participants prepare for and respond to a simulated CICO situation. This session meets the criteria for FPM/ANZCA CPD Program emergency response “can’t intubate, can’t oxygenate” (CICO) training.

W04A: Pre-exam trainee clinical examination practice
Facilitator: Dr Diarmuid McCoy
This unique workshop allows candidates to experience hands on clinical examination practice with live models and receive feedback and suggestions for improvement from mock examiners. The aim of this workshop is to assist candidates in their preparation for the clinical examination components of the final examination and long case examination and refine techniques and knowledge to increase chances of success.

Career Progression

An informative Masterclass offering invaluable insights from the Dean of the Faculty of Pain Medicine into career development strategies. Discussion to include the navigation of career upgrade and all that flows with such a transition, such as managerial tasks, human resources, medical budgets, service redesign, leadership excellence and health advocation.

Transition to retirement
Facilitator: Dr Tony Weaver
Join highly esteemed Fellow Dr Tony Weaver to explore the topic ‘transition to retirement’. Examine such areas as mentorship, educational, leadership, medico-legal and other roles in medicine, lifestyle decisions to promote satisfaction after retirement, financial considerations, and professional choices.

Exam success
Facilitator:  Dr Suzanne Cartwright
Need to pass the Fellowship examination? This is the session for you. Facilitated by previous merit winners, strategies for exam success will include planning and preparation for the written examination, tips and advice for the oral VIVA and OSCE components.

Mindfulness
Facilitator: Dr Tania Gibbie
Mindfulness is the term used to describe the practice of concentrating exclusively on what you are doing, rather than allowing yourself to be distracted by other thoughts. It's the single-minded focus you need when you're learning a new skill. This mindfulness masterclass session is led by an experienced practitioner who will help you to learn and integrate mindfulness techniques into aspects of your life; there will be guided experiential practice and some theoretical teachings.

Spin class plus
Facilitator: Mary Exton
Participate in a group fitness class for delegates at the on-site spin studio to get your heart pumping and start the day on a high. This spinning class will be physiotherapist led, it will focus on endurance, high intensity and recovery and explore the effect of attentional processes on your experience of exercising.

Social functions
There will be a welcome reception on Friday September 22 at the RACV Torquay Resort. Beverages and canap├ęs will be served to delegates and guest ticket holders.
 
A conference dinner will be held on the Saturday evening at the RACV Torquay Resort. Pre-dinner drinks will be served followed by a delicious three-course meal.
 
Delegates are encouraged to attend and enjoy the evening with colleagues and friends.
 
Optional activities
We have arranged activities to explore the coastal region and get a taste of what there is to offer. All activities will run on the afternoon of Saturday September 23 from 4-6pm. 

Torquay Experiences are optional activities open to delegates, their partner and/or family. Please purchase tickets at time of registration.

OA01: Golf
The 18-hole, par-71 course was redeveloped by Ogilvy Clayton, the Melbourne design team headed by Geoff Ogilvy. It features wide-open couch fairways, undulating greens, fescue roughs, wetlands and ocean views. Tee off following the final Saturday session, nine holes from $58 including club hire, limited spots available.

OA02: Learn to surf - Torquay Surf Academy
The thrill of catching your first wave is something everyone should experience! Pull on a wetsuit, have fun and learn to surf in a casual atmosphere. The TSA crew will show the group the right way to catch and surf waves and have a lot of fun along the way. $60 per person, all equipment is provided.

OA03: Surf Coast Walk
 Explore surfing evolution and surf culture origins on this walk past Torquay and Jan Juc surf beaches; the 'classroom' for the next generation of surfers. Peer out from Rocky Point over the many surf breaks, sheltered bays and wild headlands that gave the Surf Coast its name. Breathtaking views can also be admired from Yellow Buff and at Point Danger where an Anzac Memorial is perched high above the ocean on the headland.

One Spa - RACV Torquay
One Spa provides luxurious treatments - treat yourself to a relaxation massage, a geisha tub soak or one of the many beauty treatments.
