Description

The Faculty of Pain Medicine and the Continuing Professional Development Committee warmly welcome you to the Refresher Course Day.

Extremes of pain

It gives us great pleasure to invite all FPM and ANZCA fellows, trainees and health professionals interested in pain medicine, to the 14th Annual Faculty of Pain Medicine Refresher Course Day in 2016. The meeting will be held a day prior to the commencement of the ANZCA/FPM Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM).

The theme “Extremes of pain" will complement the ASM and will deal with the many challenges involved in managing pain in the morbidly obese, chronic spinal pain, and cancer pain.

We have three exciting international speakers headlining the programme. Professor Anthony Dickenson (FPM ASM Visitor) is Professor of Neuropharmacology at University College, London. He has made pivotal contributions to understanding the mechanisms of pain and pain control in both normal and pathophysiological conditions.

Dr Steven Cohen (FPM New Zealand visitor) is Professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD, and Associate Professor of Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He is also the Director of Medical Education for the Pain Management Division at Johns Hopkins and Director of Pain Research at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He has published extensively on interventional pain management strategies and improving pain care in wounded soldiers.

Our third international speaker is Dr John Pereira, Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at The University of Calgary. He works full-time in the field of pain management at the Calgary Chronic Pain Centre. He is a past Ronald Melzack Fellow of the McGill Pain Center and his research interests include the effect of diet on pain and optimal treatment of fibromyalgia.

We also have a talented group of local and national medical and non-medical experts to further enhance the breadth of the program.

We look forward to welcoming you to Auckland next year.
